The Indian rupee fell 105 paise against the US (United States) dollar on Wednesday, soon after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced its monetary policy. By Friday noon, the rupee had fallen to Rs 74.94 to a US dollar. This can make exports more rewarding, imports more expensive and boost customs revenues.

According to industry analysis, India's chickpea crop will be much smaller than the government is forecasting, but that is unlikely to reopen the door to Canadian yellow pea exports to that market. Imported yellow peas can be used as a substitute for Indian desi chickpeas in years when there are supply issues; IGrain director Rahul Chauhan thinks that unlikely.

The country's goods exports posted a 297.2% increase (year-on-year) in the first seven days of this fiscal to $6.79 billion and by 8.42% (YoY) over the corresponding period of 2019-20. Imports in the first week of 2021-22 (April 1-7) increased 244.2% to $ 9.66 billion and decreased by 0.65% (YoY) over 2019-20 during the week.
