The DGTR has started the probe initiated a probe into alleged subsidised exports of aluminium wires from Malaysia, which is impacting the domestic industry. The companies, Vedanta Ltd and Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd had filed an application before the DGTR for anti-subsidy investigation on these imports originating in or exported from Malaysia. If it is established that subsidies by Malaysia are impacting the domestic industry, the DGTR would recommend the amount of countervailing duty.

Export to Bangladesh was temporarily stalled as Bangladeshi traders prevented the entry of trucks at Benapole border over India’s decision to not allow import amid the pandemic. They sought trade reciprocation by the Indian government as per international protocol. After much persuasion by Indian exporters and C&F agents.

The GOI assured steel makers that it will take appropriate measures to reduce the logistics cost of products that currently reaches as high as 28 per cent. Speaking at a FICCI-organised webinar on 'Supportive Logistics for Indian Iron and Steel Industry', Minister of State for Steel Faggan Singh Kulaste told the participants that high cost of logistics is also a matter of concern for the ministry. He sought suggestions from the stakeholders on how to reduce the logistics cost of raw materials and assured them that the ministry will take steps accordingly.

Afghanistan has sent 39 containers with a total capacity of 76 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) to India through Iran’s southeastern Chabahar port. 30 refrigerated containers and nine conventional ones (a total of 76 TEUs) were shipped from Chabahar port heading for the Indian ports of Mandra and Nhava Sheva. In 2016, Iran, India, and Afghanistan decided to jointly establish a trade route for land-locked Central Asian countries.

Customs officials across the country have started releasing China originated consignments, giving relief to the pharma industry in India. However, the industry is not accepting the fact to pay the demurrage charges asked by the customs officials. The industry is planning to compile a nationwide data of imposed demurrage charges on each pharma company, and present it to the government authorities.

In a major relief to trade, the Customs department has begun giving clearance to all cargo from China. Other cargoes are also being released. Clearance to Chinese cargo by the Customs comes at a time when the intensive lockdown is to be relaxed in Chennai and neighbouring districts from July 6. Many factories, including leather and automobile, will restart production and require critical components that were imported from China.

Export of Indian goods to Bangladesh through the Petrapole border in West Bengal was disrupted due to agitation by a section of exporters of the neighbouring country. India has allowed export of goods from Petrapole, the largest land border port with Bangladesh on June 7 but has not allowed import of goods from Bangladesh. Hence, Bangladesh has stopped import as their exporters are annoyed since India has not allowed import of goods from Bangladesh through Petrapole.

A depreciating rupee is set to improve India’s competitiveness in the world market and thus help boost exports of agricultural products, textiles and gems and jewellery. The rupee has depreciated 6 per cent in the first half of the ongoing calendar year to trade at 75.51 a dollar, as against 71.38 on 1st January. The rupee had slid to 76.21 on June 16 but recovered following the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) intervention.

In what could bring some respite to various industries, the government is taking cognizance of industry representations and assuring them of faster clearances of Chinese imports stuck at various ports across India. Government sources told CNBCTV18 that the clearance of the stuck consignments will be post-proper checks and 100 percent inspections. The consignments are likely to start moving soon.
