THE LOADSTAR | Revenue-hit low-cost carriers are turning to 'passenger-freighter' action
09 September 2020
Singapore-based Scoot is removing seats from A320 aircraft for regional freight operations, while SpiceJet has used a reconfigured A340 to fly to Europe and Africa. Traditionally, low-cost carriers (LCCs) have shown scant regard for cargo. Many have not bothered with it at all, lest the loading/unloading disrupt tight turnaround times.

The government expects the robust performance to continue in the next season also. Export shot up due to sustained demand at global market. The highest sugar export before this was in 2007-08 when India shipped 4.9 million tonnes.

Of the USD 453 billion import opportunity, Indian exports to Canada stood at a meagre USD 2.9 billion in 2019, while imports by the north American country from India were 0.6 per cent. The paltry numbers are important as the two nations are negotiating a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) and a foreign investment promotion and protection agreement.

TELEGRAPH INDIA | India-Bangladesh trade halts after exporters allege corruption
08 September 2020
Border trade between India and Bangadesh through the Mahadipur land port in Malda came to a halt for four hours. This was followed by allegations of delay in the installation of a power generator and acts of corruption levelled by the Mahadipur Exporters’ Association and Mahadipur Clearing & Forwarding Agents’ association. The trade resumed at noon after customs officials assured the exporters lobby of looking into their grievances. Sunday’s suspension of the border trade was a consequence of the events that took place when only 50 per cent of the goods-laden trucks could cross the border because of power cut between 10am and 4pm.
