Om du arbetar med export och import av varor är du bekant med systemet för harmoniserad varubeskrivning och kodning, mer känt som Harmoniserade systemet (HS) eller Harmoniserade nomenklatursystemet (HSN). Det är en allmänt accepterad metod för klassificering av handlade varor. Dess huvudsakliga funktion är att hjälpa tullmyndigheterna att identifiera produkter och bedöma rätt tullar och skatter på dem. I det harmoniserade systemet tilldelas varje produkt en unik numerisk kod som kallas HS-koden. Denna kod har minst sex siffror och kan vanligtvis gå upp till 10 siffror (även om Kina har en 13-siffrig kod).

De två första siffrorna identifierar det kapitel som produkten faller in i
De följande två siffrorna identifierar en rubrik med det kapitlet
De två sista siffrorna anger en underrubrik som gör den mer specifik
