Hvis du beskæftiger dig med eksport og import af varer, er du bekendt med det harmoniserede varebeskrivelses- og kodesystem, bedre kendt som det harmoniserede system (HS) eller det harmoniserede nomenklatursystem (HSN). Det er en universelt accepteret metode til klassificering af handlede varer. Dens vigtigste funktion er at hjælpe toldmyndighederne med at identificere produkter og vurdere de rigtige told og afgifter på dem. I det harmoniserede system tildeles hvert produkt en unik numerisk kode kaldet HS-koden. Denne kode har mindst seks cifre og kan typisk gå op til 10 cifre (selvom Kina har en 13-cifret kode).
