Foreign direct investments from Taiwan are not covered under the latest policy changes. Investments from Taiwan will be treated as they were previously and are excluded from the latest changes. India considers investments from Taiwan separately and they were never sent for security clearance.

Arvind Kumar Sharma on Friday assumed charge as Secretary in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry. A control room set up by the DPIIT to monitor issues of trade and industry has resolved as many as 1,739 matters as on 28 April. The issues were pertaining to internal trade, manufacturing, delivery and logistics of essential commodities during the lockdown period. The matters were further addressed to the concerned state government, district and police authorities as well as other agencies to resolve supply chain issues.

Hundreds of import containers have piled up at Ludhiana dry port as they have not been cleared yet. Businessmen claim that there’s no demand for the goods ordered and that they are unable to pay the hefty charges imposed by the shipping companies. Businessmen demand that shipping lines and customs department waive off the charges till  1st June.

Earlier, the government had extended till April 30 the validity of e-way bills, required for inter-state movement of goods worth over Rs 50,000. Now, it has been extended until May 31, 2020. These are applicable for those that were to expire between March 20 and April 15. For ODC like trucks, the validity is one day for every 20 km.

As against a storage capacity of 1,500 containers of 20 ft each, the port at Birgunj in Nepal has built a stockpile of 4,000 boxes, as importers in Nepal are barely taking deliveries. At least seven rakes returned empty from Birgunj. Nepal barely has any exportable cargo. Non-availability of trucks and labour at Birgunj are major reasons behind the slow movement of cargo.

The MHA has asked all the State governments to ensure free movement of trucks and good carriers, including empty trucks Local authorities should not insist on separate passes for these vehicles at inter-State borders across the country.

The government's order to waive off detention charges has led to congestion at port terminals. With repeated notifications for extended free time on container detention from the government, the consignees have no incentive to expedite the clearances. They’re using containers for storage of cargo as factories are shut due to the lockdown.

Transporters including Denmark’s Maersk are increasingly moving critical medical equipment to Europe from China by rail as air and sea cargoes struggle with lockdowns due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Continued restrictions on air travel and delays to port entry have hampered traditional supply lines for freight companies. In the past, they have relied heavily on flights and shipping to move goods around the world.
