Movement of trucks across the India-Bangladesh border continue to remain suspended for over 70 days now, in the absence of clarity of orders at the district authority levels. Sources estimate that at least 6,500 trucks are stranded across six different land ports of West Bengal. International trade is on via rail.

The MRAI has moved the Supreme Court for implementation of government orders, directing shipping lines and CFS to waive off detention charges, ground rent and demurrage during the lockdown period. HAPAG LLYOD has issued a notice that there will be incremental delays for import arrivals into Inland Container Depot (ICD) SONIPAT, due to an exponential rise in import volumes and COVID 19 situation. Average Import dwell time at the port is about two weeks. Average transit time is between 5 to 15 days.

The FIEO has written to West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, seeking her intervention for an early resumption of India-Bangladesh trade through land ports. The FIEO said that it is hurting the export-import community to a large extent. And, a sizeable chunk of that belongs to the MSME sector. Exporters have been witnessing cancellation of orders due to non-delivery of goods. And importers are seeking compensation for incurring losses at their end.
