The lockdown led to a sharp drop in imports. Normally, the containers used for imports are deployed for exports as exporters have to bear additional transportation cost if they bring empty containers from the ports. According to industry, there has been a surge in industrial activity in Ludhiana and surrounding towns after the lockdown was lifted. It also led to surge in exports as the traders had to meet export obligations. As a result, the demand for containers also shot up.

With immediate effect, for empty container pick-up from Dalian, Tianjin, Qingdao, Xiamen, Shanghai, Yantian, Shekou and Hongkong ports, containers will be released within 10 days prior to vessel’s estimated time of arrival (ETA). For empty container pick-up from Ningbo ports, containers will be released within 7 days prior to vessel’s estimated time of arrival (ETA).

Lobby group Shipping Australia has announced its support to DP World Australia’s application to the Fair Work Commission to terminate industrial action at terminals across the country on the grounds that the action threatens to cause significant damage to the Australian economy and to New South Wales. Strikes have been ongoing at the Patrick, Hutchison and DP World terminals at Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne over the past week. Port Botany is the latest place to go on strike.

Electricity at Laem Chabang Terminal will temporarily be disconnected on September 27, 2020 from 12 pm to 6 pm (GMT+7). Affected terminals are Terminal C1C2 and Terminal D. In Terminal C1C2, all vessel operations will be ceased, return of outbound reefer containers will not be accepted and general containers is allowed for delivery and pick up as usual. Whereas, in Terminal D, all vessel operations and gate activities will be ceased and all containers are not allowed to be delivered or picked up.

Freight forwarders that are now unable to restitute empty containers to the port of Felixstowe until September 23rd say it is yet another example of appalling service from a port that describes itself as ‘The Port of Britain’.

The Daily Star | India takes steps to allow at least 1,000 trucks to carry onion to Bangladesh

The officials of the Indian external affairs ministry have begun talks with the commerce ministry officials on allowing at least 1,000 trucks containing onions to proceed to Bangladesh to supply the kitchen staple. The talks began in the wake of reports that the trucks, each containing 25 tonnes of onion, are stranded at the trade points along Bangladesh's border with West Bengal. The trucks are stranded at Petrapole, Mahadipur in Malda, Hili, Ghojaldanga, Changrabandha and Fulbari in West Bengal since the ban on export of onions was announced.

New enrollments of international students from India expanded 32% in 2019 from a year earlier and it’s the fastest growing major market for Australian services. India has overtaken China as the largest source of net migration to Australia, and its diaspora is the third largest Down Under, just behind China and the U.K.
