A container vessel X-Press Godavari ship has caught fire and Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft have been deployed for the firefighting operation on September 28. Indian Coast Guard ship Amogh and Dornier aircraft have commenced firefighting operations as ICGS Amrit Kaur and Varad are proceeding to the area for further assistance.

The government has given additional three months’ time till December to millers to undertake mandatory export of their sugar quota allocated for this year. For the 2019-20 marketing year ending September, the government has allowed export of 6 million tonnes of sugar under the quota to help deal with surplus sugar. Out of 6 million tonnes, 5.7 million tonnes of sugar have been contracted. And about 5.6 million tonnes have been moved from mills

Exporters' body FIEO has urged the commerce ministry to lift export ban on 'Bangalore rose' onion as there is a very little demand for this variety of the commodity in the domestic market. On September 14, the government banned the export of all varieties of onions with immediate effect, a move aimed at increasing availability and checking price of the commodity in the domestic market.

A container shortage in India is causing long delays for exporters, especially on US trades. The Loadstar had reported the operational impact from the creeping equipment shortage in Asia – dominant head haul traffic has caused empties to pile-up at ports in the US and Australia, prompting carriers to plead for the swift return of used import boxes. According to New Jersey-based Worldwide Logistics (WL), the equipment shortage has spread to India, partly due to a drop in import volumes from China after trade restrictions were imposed by the government.
