The FBX Asia–USWC component edged up by 1%, to $4,334 per 40ft, while rates to the US east coast were flat at $5,739 per 40ft. Transpacific rates for the US west coast are 210% higher than a year ago, with east coast rates up 113% on 12 months ago. Shippers are resigned to the probability that container spot freight rates from Asia will remain at their current high levels after the Chinese New Year.

India, the world’s second-biggest sugar producer after Brazil, is likely to sell 4.3 million tonnes of the sweetener on the world market in the 2020-21 season against 5.7 million tonnes shipped in the preceding year. India’s sugar exports are expected to drop more than 24% in the current year to September because of logistical constraints such as a scarcity of containers and congestion at the country’s ports, a leading trade body said.

John Fossey, the Senior Analyst on Container Equipment at Drewry, said that containers are not promptly delivered to delivery points. Fossey noted that major Southern Californian ports, including Long Beach and Los Angeles, are under “unexpected pace and sustained demand” due to the e-commerce boom from the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as disruption to shipping lines and national or regionalized lockdowns being levied across the industry.
