Intermodal freight transport involves the transportation of freight in an intermodal container or vehicle, using multiple modes of transportation (rail, ship, and truck), without any handling of the freight itself when changing modes. This prevents potential damage to the goods while handling and helps in providing speedy delivery. It is a term used to describe two or more modes of transporting freight. Either a combination of truck and rail to transport or move goods from a shipper to a consignee. The intermodal process usually starts when a container is moved by truck to a rail station, then back on a truck to complete the freight-forwarding process. This mode of transport also lowers shipping costs because it combines a railway system as it requires less fuel than any other type of road transport.
